Introduction
What Is the Gmail Add-in?
Section titled “What Is the Gmail Add-in?”The Athenty Matter Planner Gmail Add-in is a Google Workspace Add-on that lets you link an open Gmail email to a matter in Athenty Matter Planner. Open any email, search for the relevant matter in the sidebar panel, and tap Link — the email metadata attaches to the matter’s Emails tab without leaving Gmail.
Because it is built as a Google Workspace Add-on (not a Chrome extension), a single install covers Gmail Web, Gmail for Android, and Gmail for iOS automatically. You do not need a separate app or per-device setup.
Who Is It For?
Section titled “Who Is It For?”The Gmail Add-in is designed for Athenty Matter Planner users who use Gmail as their primary email client. It is particularly useful for:
- Lawyers and compliance officers who use Google Workspace and need an email audit trail attached to a matter
- Teams that receive high-volume client correspondence and need to route emails to the correct matter quickly
- Users who work across devices — the same add-on links emails from a desktop browser, an Android phone, or an iPhone
Prerequisite: Your organization must have the Matter Planner add-on enabled. Contact your Athenty account admin or see Pricing to enable it.
Note: Google Workspace Add-ons require a Google Workspace account (business or education). Personal @gmail.com accounts are not supported by the Google Workspace Add-on platform.

How Emails Are Linked
Section titled “How Emails Are Linked”When you tap Link to matter, the add-in sends the following fields to Athenty Matter Planner:
- Subject line
- Sender name and email address
- Recipients (To and CC)
- Internet message ID (for deduplication)
- Gmail thread ID
- Sent date and time
- Plain-text body snippet (first ~512 characters)
- Plain-text body (up to ~4,000 characters captured at link time — see note below)
- Attachment names, MIME types, and sizes (content upload not yet available)
Note on body length: The Gmail Add-in captures a preview of the body at the time the email is opened. For very long emails, the body text may be truncated in the preview. Full body content up to 65,000 characters is sent to the Athenty API when you tap Link.
Security
Section titled “Security”The add-in uses two Gmail OAuth scopes:
gmail.addons.current.message.metadata— reads sender, recipients, subject, and dategmail.addons.current.message.readonly— reads the email body
It cannot send email, modify messages, access other messages in your mailbox, or read calendar or contact data.
Your Athenty session token is stored in Google’s PropertiesService — encrypted at rest by Google, per-user, and per-add-on. Tokens are scoped to matter operations only and can be revoked at any time from Settings → General → Matter Planner Add-ins in your Athenty dashboard.
